Explore The Exciting Areas of the
CHS Theatre!

We would like to invite all students to come and check out what we do at the CHS theatre.  You can be an actor, singer, dancer, lighting technician, stage crew member or another backstage job.  If you would like to come and see what our productions are like, here are our remaining show dates: Student Directed One Acts - March 26, 27 @7:30 P.M.  Alice in Wonderland - April 22, 23, 24 @7:30 P.M. at Bridges Auditorium at the Claremont Colleges.  Don't forget to come see the Comedy Sportz team in action in their last few matches of the season April 16, 30 and also on May 7 @7:02 P.M.
CHS has an award winning theatre program.  For the last few years, we have won numerous top honors at the California State Thespian Festival.  In 1997 we were invited as one of the nine schools to perform at the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska.  In February 1999, 2001, and 2003 we were selected to perform mainstage at the California State Thespian Festival.  The 2004-2005 theatre season will include one extra-curricular show, one musical, two plays, the one act plays, one children's musical and our Comedy Sportz Shows.

Musical Theatre Workshop (Grades 9-12):  If you enjoy singing, dancing, acting and musicals, this class is for you!  You will build performing skills and musical abilities.  In the fall this class will perform in our Friends of Our Theatre (F.O.O.T) Auction.  In the spring this talented group performs the musical at Bridges Auditorium at the Claremont Colleges.  In the past few years we've performed 42nd Street, Evita, Hello Dolly, and Oklahoma!  We will have rehearsals outside of class, and all dress rehearsals and performances will be in the evenings.  Be prepared to challenge yourself and work hard.  By the end of the year, you will gain confidence and have a great time. (Audition Only) Auditions are Wednesday, April 14th 3-5 P.M.

Theatre Production (Grades 9-12):  If you enjoy sharing your dramatic abilities by performing plays, then Theatre Production is the choice for you!  The first semester will be a challenging drama, while the second semester will be a comedy.  Other than dress rehearsal, there will be no other rehearsals outside of class.  There are evening and weekend matinee performances.  Gain confidence in your acting abilities, and improve all your skills on stage. (Audition Only) Auditions are on Thursday April 15th 3-5 P.M.

Children's Theatre(Grades 9-12):  This is a course for students who would like to perform in a children's show.  Performers of all levels are welcome in this course, and every student will be cast in the production.  Performers with experience may earn a leading role, while those who are beginning their performance career might consider auditioning for a smaller role.  The entire year will be spent studying acting, vocal, and dance techniques, plus auditioning, rehearsing and preparing for the show.  All  rehearsal time is during class except for dress rehearsals (evenings) and shows (evenings/matinees).  After the April show the final project for this course is a joint performance with the special education music class. (NO AUDITION REQUIRED)

Technical Theatre (Grades 9-12): Get behind the scenes of a play or musical.  If you enjoy working with lighting or sound, building sets, and working with props or costumes, then you will enjoy Technical Theatre.  This class will teach you technical skills, as well as the different techniques that bring life to a show.  Students must work on at least one show per semester (requires attendance at evening and matinee tech/dress rehearsals and performances).  No experience required -- we'll teach you the skills you need.

Acting 1 (Grades 9-12): Do you need to brush up your acting skills?  This class will help you develop skills by performing scenes or one acts in front of the class.  Build your skills in the areas of vocal projection and character development.  Acting 1 is for all students who are beginning actors, even if you have had an Acting 1 class.

Acting 2 (Grades 9-12): This course concentrates on character development, scene work and acting for the camera, as well as basic directing skills.  They also perform one act plays at a public performance.

Comedy Sportz Team - This is a selected team of students who train with Comedy Sportz LA and put on Comedy Sportz Matches at CHS.  Comedy Sportz is a competitive team improv with lots of audience participation.  It is an audition only group, who train on several Saturdays and one evening per week.  All levels of theatre (acting) students are encouraged to audition @ our September tryouts.

Thespians - This is an International honor society devoted to the art of theatre.  By working backstage, acting, putting hours of hard work during shows or after school you can earn points.  Once you have reached the total of 25 points then you are ready to be initiated at the banquet.  Don't miss out on the parties, festivals, and further events that the Thespian Troupe will be planning.  Attending the Thespian meetings is required.
